Victoria Falls Hotel Review: Ilala Lodge & Palm River Hotel

Updated: Sep 25

A Stay at Two Iconic Victoria Falls Hotels

For our trip to Zimbabwe, we stayed at Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel, two sister properties situated on the banks of the mighty Victoria Falls. We were so excited to be back in this region, which was hands down one of the highlights of last year.

Both properties showcase the perfect balance of comfort, location, and authentic Zimbabwean hospitality, making them an ideal choice if you’re searching for the best Victoria Falls hotel for your stay.

Ilala Lodge – Love at First Sight

The Ilala Lodge hotel was love at first sight. A modern resort with the right balance between comfort and old-world charm, this family-run boutique hotel is brimming with class and elegance.

 Location, Location, Location!

When it comes to visiting popular attractions, we prefer staying close to the action. One of the best reasons to stay here is that the lodge is within walking distance from the Victoria Falls and the city center. You can easily book activities, grab a sundowner, or take a stroll for sunrise or sunset.

This convenient location is what makes Ilala Lodge stand out as a top Victoria Falls hotel.

Lounge and Common Areas

The shared spaces are designed with exquisite taste and elegance. Think fine dark wood, tall ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and crisp linen. The entire setting carries a colonial-era charm, giving you the sense of stepping into a heritage retreat.

 Rooms at Ilala Lodge

There are 73 rooms and suites at this property, catering to solo travelers, couples, and families.

Standard & Deluxe Rooms

The rooms are spacious and come with modern amenities, including a fully stocked mini-bar. The highlight? Every guest gets a slice of the view—right from the balcony, you can see the world’s most spectacular natural wonder.

Our Deluxe Room was tastefully furnished with white linens, tapestry, dark wooden furniture, and a ridiculously comfortable bed. The bathroom was just as spacious, featuring an open shower and sustainable bath products.

Extra perks like a coffee machine, mini-bar, and fresh baked treats (all included in the rate) were especially welcome after a warm day exploring the Falls.

Dining & Bar

The dining area was one of my favorite spaces. Styled with impeccable finesse, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with unbeatable views of the Victoria Falls any time of day.

You can enjoy continental as well as local options from their à la carte menu, or pop over to the bar for a sundowner by the pool.

Breakfast with a View

Breakfast was a real highlight. We loved the variety, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, alongside a grand buffet. Everything was beautifully presented and served quickly.

Arrive early if you’d like a scenic spot overlooking the Falls—it’s the best way to start your day at a Victoria Falls hotel.

Service That Feels Personal

Though boutique in size, the service standards here rival those of a luxury resort. The ever-smiling staff go above and beyond to ensure everything you need is taken care of. It’s the small, thoughtful touches that made us feel like royalty throughout our stay.

Things to Do Around Victoria Falls

When in Victoria Falls, there’s no shortage of activities—whether you prefer adrenaline-pumping adventures or relaxed sightseeing. Some must-dos include:

  • 🌅 Sunset river cruise

  • 💦 Devil’s Pool experience

  • 🚶 Walking tour inside Victoria Falls National Park

  • 🌊 White-water rafting

  • ⚡ Ziplining across the gorge

  • 🚁 Helicopter ride over the Falls

The concierge team at Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel are excellent. They’ll not only book activities for you but also offer competitive rates and personalized recommendations.

Palm River Hotel – A Modern Escape

The Palm River Hotel complements Ilala Lodge with a more modern resort-style setting along the Zambezi River. Spacious rooms, manicured lawns, and a tranquil riverside vibe make it perfect for couples and families looking for a calm base just minutes from the Falls.

Together, these two properties represent the best of both worlds—a boutique Victoria Falls hotel with heritage charm (Ilala Lodge) and a modern riverside escape (Palm River Hotel).

Final Thoughts

Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel are shining examples of getting the basics right without going over the top. Both properties offer amazing value for money, considering their proximity to Victoria Falls, excellent food, warm service, and inviting spaces.

If you’re searching for the best Victoria Falls hotel, these two sister properties should be at the top of your list. They are the perfect base for exploring one of the world’s most magical natural wonders.
